Mount Kilimanjaro
The Roof of Africa

Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s largest free-standing mountain and Africa’s highest peak, with its snow-capped Uhuru Peak looming 19,341 feet above the savannah plains like a beacon to nature’s most mind-boggling phenomena. It encompasses a climatic world tour through five wholly unique ecosystems from base to peak. Even before entering Kilimanjaro National Park, the lower cultivated foot slopes give way to a beautiful montane forest belt teeming with elusive and endangered wildlife populations such as elephant, leopard, buffalo, colobus monkeys, prolific birdlife, and the endangered Abbot’s duiker.

The moorland zone is even higher, with a dense cover of heather studded with giant lobelias. The surreal alpine deserts of moss and lichen are the last vestiges of vegetation before reaching the summit’s winter wonderland of snow and glacial ice.
