Ol Pejeta Bush Camp, owned and managed by legendary guide Alex Hunter, is an excellent base from which to explore the renowned Ol Pejeta Conservancy, from pioneering conservation projects to spectacular sightings of white and black rhino and rare Northern wildlife.
Six traditional East African safari tents on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, commanding magnificent views of Mount Kenya, offer a true bush experience – low key and low impact but thoroughly comfortable. Warm blankets for winter mornings, rechargeable solar lights, and en-suite bathrooms with hot-water safari bucket showers are included in all tents. Individual verandas are ideal for spending an afternoon alone, watching the animals come and go along the river bank.
The hub of the camp is the two communal tents that look out over the vast plains. Meals are served under canvas in the dining tent, and the breezy mess tent, with its inviting sofas and armchairs, encapsulates the camp’s friendly, relaxed atmosphere. When the sun goes down, the evenings are spent around the fire, hoping to catch a glimpse of a rhino ambling down to the river to drink.
Along with the traditional game drives and bush walks with Alex Hunter, activities at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp focus on the conservancy’s unique conservation projects. Visits to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary – the only place in Kenya where this critically endangered species can be seen – and the Northern white rhino enclosure are both available, as are mornings or afternoons spent with local communities to gain an understanding of the conservancy’s daily operations.
