Chyulu Hills National Park
The world’s youngest volcanic mountain ranges
Home » Destinations » Kenya »
The Chyulu Hills, located between Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks, are one of the world’s youngest volcanic mountain ranges. The landscape, which stretches for 150 kilometers and reaches an elevation of just over 2,000 meters, is distinguished by lush green hills covered in dense cloud forest and solidified lava flows spilling down the slopes, revealing its explosive history.
The lower slopes’ wooded savannah is home to wildebeest, eland, giraffe, huge elephant bulls, and buffalo, while flocks of forest birds flit through the trees deep within the hills. Lake Jipe, located in the park’s southwest corner, is another excellent spot for birdwatching.
The lion population, which was once hunted for preying on the local Maasai cattle, is slowly returning from the brink of extinction, and there are a few wild black rhinos under close ranger supervision.
