Tortilis Camp

A Luxurious Safari Retreat in Amboseli

Tortilis Camp is strategically located in a private concession just outside the Amboseli National Park. The Camp enjoys the rare privilege of exclusivity overlooking an expansive 30,000-acre private conservancy, allowing guests to escape the busier sections of the national park. This private area permits activities like guided bushwalks and night game drives, which are not allowed inside the national park itself. This access means you get the best of both worlds, proximity to Amboseli’s famous elephants and the peaceful solitude of private wilderness.

The camp is surrounded by acacia trees, creating a cool and shaded environment that contrasts beautifully with the open, dusty plains of the park. But what sets Tortilis Camp apart even further is its breathtaking view of Mount Kilimanjaro, which dominates the horizon and forms a stunning backdrop to your stay.

Accommodation: Tented Luxury with Kilimanjaro Views

Tortilis Camp offers 16 spacious en-suite safari tents that combine rustic charm with modern comfort. Each tent features large, comfortable beds, stylish decor using natural materials, and ensuite bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets. The highlight of each tent is the wide private verandah, where guests can relax with a book or a drink while enjoying uninterrupted views of Mt. Kilimanjaro or observing the passing wildlife.

For families or groups seeking additional space and privacy, Tortilis Camp also offers a family tent and a private house. The family tent includes a double en-suite bedroom and a twin en-suite bedroom, along with a generous verandah—perfect for unwinding together after a game drive. The private house, ideal for larger families or two couples traveling together, features an en-suite double room, an en-suite triple room, and a shared living and dining area that opens to a large verandah. The family tent and private house share an exclusive swimming pool, making it easy to cool off in the heat of the day in total privacy.

Dining: Fresh, Local, and Scenic

Dining at Tortilis Camp is a relaxed but elegant affair. The large open-air dining room is designed to maximize views of Kilimanjaro, adding a dramatic touch to every meal. Guests dine at individual tables, enjoying attentive service and a rotating menu inspired by local and international cuisines.

One of the unique features of Tortilis Camp is its use of homegrown produce. The camp maintains its garden to grow fresh vegetables and salads, which are included in every meal. Before dinner, guests are invited to the bar and lounge area for drinks and canapés—a perfect time to socialize and reflect on the day’s adventures while the sun sets behind the great mountain.

Wildlife and Activities

Amboseli is famous for its large elephant populations, and Tortilis Camp is ideally located to observe these gentle giants up close. The area is home to several well-known elephant families that have been studied for decades. Renowned elephant researcher Cynthia Moss has conducted pioneering studies here for over 25 years, and her work has contributed greatly to our understanding of elephant behavior. The camp’s guides are knowledgeable and passionate about these animals, and many have personally followed the lives of specific elephant families over the years.

Guests interested in learning more can arrange a visit to the nearby Elephant Research Centre, a fascinating experience that offers insight into the lives, social structures, and conservation efforts surrounding the world’s largest land mammals.

Besides elephants, Amboseli is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, and over 400 bird species. The open landscape and sparse vegetation make for excellent game viewing and photography.

Activities available at Tortilis Camp include:

  • Morning and evening game drives in both the national park and private conservancy

  • Night drives in the private area, a rare and thrilling opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife

  • Guided bushwalks with Maasai guides who share their deep knowledge of the land, plants, and animal tracks

  • Cultural visits to nearby Maasai villages for an immersive experience of local traditions and lifestyle

  • Massage and wellness treatments to help you relax after a long day in the bush

Family-Friendly Safari Experience

Tortilis Camp is a fantastic option for families. With spacious accommodations designed for groups and a variety of flexible activities, children and adults alike will find something to love. The private pool shared by the family tent and house offers a safe space for children to play, while the guides are experienced in working with younger guests, ensuring that the entire family feels included and engaged.

Sustainability and Community

The camp is built with sustainability in mind, using locally sourced materials and supporting nearby communities. Employment and training of staff are largely focused on the local Maasai population, and the camp contributes to conservation and community outreach programs in the area. Guests can feel good knowing that their visit supports not only conservation of the land and wildlife but also the livelihoods of the people who call it home.
