Beho Beho

The first camp in the Northern sector of the Selous game reserve

Beho Beho is much more than a safari camp—it is a sanctuary of serenity, history, and untamed beauty in one of Tanzania’s most remote and remarkable landscapes. Known affectionately as wansalishi—the Swahili word for “the pioneer”—Beho Beho holds the distinct honor of being the very first camp established in the northern sector of the Selous Game Reserve, now part of the Nyerere National Park. This iconic camp sits proudly on Kipalala Hill, its stone cottages offering sweeping, panoramic views over the Rufiji River floodplain. With its elevated position and thoughtful design, Beho Beho blends naturally into the environment, creating a haven where luxury meets wilderness.

A Strategic and Storied Location

As the crow flies, Beho Beho lies approximately 145 miles southwest of Dar es Salaam, making it accessible yet delightfully off-the-beaten-path. Just three miles away rests the grave of Frederick Courteney Selous, the legendary explorer and conservationist for whom the reserve was originally named. This proximity to Selous’ final resting place lends the camp a sense of timelessness and reverence for the natural world, deepening the connection between guests and the land they explore.

The camp’s position on Kipalala Hill is not only picturesque, it’s also strategic. Elevated above the floodplain, it offers cool breezes and endless vistas, and serves as a natural viewing platform for observing game below. Wildlife roams freely in this protected region, and sightings from the camp are frequent and often dramatic. Elephants, wild dogs, lions, buffalo, and hippos are all commonly seen, even from the comfort of your banda verandah.

Elegant Bandas with a Wild Twist

Beho Beho offers a uniquely luxurious take on safari living with its eight spacious bandas—charming cottages built from stone and topped with traditional palm thatch. Each banda is carefully positioned for privacy and to maximize views over the Rufiji plains. Designed for both comfort and connection to nature, the bandas are completely open at the front, allowing you to fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush and awaken to golden sunrises over the hills. Guests have the option to leave the front open or close it for the night, depending on their comfort.

Inside, the bandas are furnished to a high standard, with thoughtful design and elegant décor that pays homage to East African heritage. King-sized beds with crisp linens invite restful sleep, while Zanzibari day beds and writing desks add an element of timeless charm. Comfortable “suite” furniture ensures you have a cozy indoor sitting area, though the large verandah just outside your front door often becomes the favorite lounging spot.

A separate dressing room leads into a large en suite bathroom. These bathrooms are a true highlight, featuring twin basins, a classic high-flush WC, and a signature open-air shower. This indulgent design allows you to bathe beneath the sky, surrounded by nature, yet in total privacy—a perfect symbol of Beho Beho’s commitment to unpretentious luxury.

The Heart of the Camp: The Main House

At the center of Beho Beho is the Main House, an airy, open-plan structure that functions as both a lounge and dining area. Its most distinctive feature is the absence of walls, which allows for uninterrupted views and a constant sense of connection to the wild surroundings. Furnished like a private home, the Main House includes deep sofas, curated African art, and a full-sized billiards table—ideal for post-safari relaxation.

The Eagle’s Nest, a raised private dining deck within the Main House, is perfect for romantic dinners or special occasions. It’s tucked away for privacy but still open to the sights and sounds of the bush. Elsewhere in the Main House, guests can find quiet reading nooks, shaded lounging spots, and even spaces to catch up with fellow travelers over a cocktail or afternoon tea.

The structure is crowned by an expansive palm thatch roof that offers shelter without cutting off the outside world. Whether you’re enjoying a casual chat with the camp hosts or watching giraffes meander past in the distance, the Main House provides a welcoming and relaxed environment.

A Culinary Safari Like No Other

One of Beho Beho’s most treasured traditions is its approach to dining. Meals are an ever-changing experience, with settings and menus that surprise and delight. Breakfasts might be served at a lookout point with panoramic views, lunches on a breezy veranda, and dinners under the stars beside a crackling fire. While there is a formal dining room, it is just one of many places where meals are served—ensuring that each day brings a new and memorable setting.

Menus are tailored daily using fresh, seasonal ingredients, with a mix of international flavors and Swahili influences. Dining at Beho Beho is more than a meal; it’s a celebration of place, time, and community. Guests are often joined by guides and camp hosts, creating a communal and story-rich atmosphere.

Bush breakfasts and picnics are another highlight of the Beho Beho culinary experience. These are often part of extended game drives or walking safaris, allowing you to enjoy delicious meals in the heart of the wilderness, with birdsong and rustling leaves as your soundtrack.

Immersive Safari Adventures

Beho Beho is renowned for offering one of the most comprehensive and intimate safari experiences in Tanzania. The camp prides itself on small-group, highly personalized excursions led by expert guides. Game drives are conducted in open 4×4 vehicles, but Beho Beho is also one of the few camps in the region licensed to conduct walking safaris.

Walking through the bush with an armed guide is a profoundly immersive experience, revealing the subtle details of the environment—tracks, scents, bird calls, and plant life—that are often missed from a vehicle. For many guests, these walks are the most memorable part of their stay, offering a primal connection to the land and its rhythms.

Boat safaris on nearby lakes, seasonal depending on water levels, add another layer of exploration, allowing guests to glide past pods of hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. These multi-dimensional safari options ensure that every day at Beho Beho is different, enriching, and deeply rewarding.

A Legacy of Conservation and Authenticity

Beho Beho’s legacy is closely tied to the conservation of the Selous ecosystem. As the original camp in this part of the reserve, it set the standard for responsible tourism in the area, and it continues to prioritize sustainability and local engagement. The camp operates with a light footprint and supports conservation initiatives both locally and nationally.

The staff—many of whom have been with Beho Beho for years—are warm, knowledgeable, and committed to providing a world-class experience without pretense. Their genuine hospitality and deep understanding of the land ensure that your visit is not only comfortable but also enlightening and soul-stirring.
